Not satisfied being  male-only they are also unique among the insect species. And they are not made of mouth parts, nor antennae or even modified legs. They are horns. Horns that came to the attention of this Charles Darwin guy, who had a love affair with insects since his childhood and used the horned ones to explain sexual selection. <br \/> [<i>Translator&#8217;s note: the terms &#8220;love affair with insects&#8221; and &#8220;sexual&#8221; were not meant to be related in <\/i><u><i><em>that<\/em><\/i><\/u><i> way<\/i>].<\/p>\n<p>Male beetles use those horns to battle for the females. They joust in restrictive environments, like tunnels dug by them for the egg-laying business of their lady counterparts. And, pretty much always, the longer the horn, the greater the number of victories, which translate into more fertilized females and more descendants<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/maiabee\/3382508440\/in\/set-72157615846253084\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com.br\/brazillion\/files\/2011\/08\/Trypoxylus%20%28Allomyrina%29%20dichotomus.jpg\" alt=\"Trypoxylus (Allomyrina) dichotomus.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><br \/>\u00a9<b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/olga_helmy\/\" title=\"Link to olga_helmy's photostream\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">olga_helmy<\/a><\/b><\/div>\n<p>Like any structure subject to sexual selection (even though the choice is not up to the female, winning battles ensure reproduction), they are an impressive diversifying force. Horned beetles are extremely numerous and varied. Responsible for one of the greatest events in speciation, the diversity in shapes of horns are an example of the power of an evolutionary dispute.<br \/> Did anyone mention <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com.br\/rainha\/sobre.php\">Red Queen<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/maiabee\/3381690297\/in\/set-72157615846253084\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com.br\/brazillion\/files\/2011\/08\/Dynastes%20hercules.jpg\" alt=\"Dynastes hercules.jpg\" height=\"213\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/olga_helmy\/\" title=\"Link to olga_helmy's photostream\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">olga_helmy<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>Creating diversity<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Before creationists start oozing their happy fluids with their irreducible complexity, the ability to grow (or to not grow) horns seems to be very flexible in beetles. After its debut, it showed up and disappeared in several species.<br \/>\nApparently it takes only one mutation to activate or deactivate that<br \/>\ncharacteristic, making the change possible in only one or a few<br \/>\ngenerations.<b>[1]<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The formation of the horn is very well studied. Still in its larva phase (<a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com.br\/brazillion\/files\/2011\/08\/FileAtlas_larvae.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\">some are huge<\/a>), just before metamorphosis, the head region suffers a proliferation of cells that will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogs.unicamp.br\/brazillion\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/208\/2011\/08\/Egracillicornis3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\">expand during the pupa phase<\/a>. Some beetles develop horns<br \/>\nduring their pupa phase and reabsorb the tissue later on, both male and<br \/>\nfemale in some cases, showing the characteristics variation between species. <b>[2]<\/b><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/maiabee\/3382508558\/in\/set-72157615846253084\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com.br\/brazillion\/files\/2011\/08\/Onthophagus%20%28Proagoderus%29%20lanista.jpg\" alt=\"Onthophagus (Proagoderus) lanista.jpg\" height=\"328\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/olga_helmy\/\" title=\"Link to olga_helmy's photostream\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">olga_helmy<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>New tricks to old genes<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Moreover,<br \/>\nsaid variation depends upon well-known genes with important functions<br \/>\nin appendages formation (like legs). Instead of &#8220;inventing&#8221; new<br \/>\nregulators for horn growth, beetles<br \/>\ngave new fuctions to already present genes, debunking the idea that<br \/>\nimportant genes have their functions &#8220;frozen&#8221; and no longer have any<br \/>\nplasticity. <\/p>\n<p>And the genes used not only vary between species but also inside single species, according to the male beetle size. One more piece of evidence for the ease of losing\/gaining of the suckers.<\/p>\n<p>In some species, like the <i>Onthophagus taurus<\/i> (same genus as the <i>Onthophagus lanista<\/i> above), only males bigger than a certain threshold develop all the head horns, whilst those who were smaller larvae develop only chest horns and some head horns.<br \/>\nThe beetle below this illustrates the difference; the single horn in<br \/>\nfront of the eyes is the head horn and the double ones are chest horns.<\/p>\n<p>If one of the genes responsible for their development (gene <i>DII<\/i>) is deactivated, only large males are affected and can not grow all the head horns, while medium and small-sized one grew theirs normally. This indicates that the path bigger males utilize is different.<\/p>\n<p>In yet another close-related species, <i>O. binodis<\/i>, inactivating gene <i>DII<\/i> obliterated horns all around in males and females of all sizes, showing another kind of regulation.<b>[3]<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A few more photos just so you can appreciate how evolution creates diversity (after all, Atila&#8217;s blog is not
