O animal encontrado tratava-se de um macho adulto com<br \/>\ncerca de 5,4 metros de comprimento e aproximadamente uma tonelada de<br \/>\npeso. O esp\u00e9cime em quest\u00e3o corresponde ao terceiro<br \/>\ntubar\u00e3o-de-boca-grande j\u00e1 assinalado para o Oceano Atl\u00e2ntico, e<br \/>\nsomente ao 43\u00ba representante da esp\u00e9cie conhecido em todo o mundo.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\" align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><font face=\"Microsoft Sans Serif, sans-serif\">Segundo<br \/>\nos bi\u00f3logos Luciano Moreira Lima e Bruno Renn\u00f3, respons\u00e1veis pela<br \/>\ndescoberta e pesquisadores do Projeto Aves, Quel\u00f4nios e Mam\u00edferos<br \/>\nMarinhos da Bacia de Campos, “o tubar\u00e3o-de-boca-grande \u00e9<br \/>\nconsiderado um dos tubar\u00f5es mais raros do mundo. Apesar de poder<br \/>\natingir at\u00e9 5,5 metros de comprimento e possuir uma apar\u00eancia<br \/>\ninconfund\u00edvel, com uma cabe\u00e7a desproporcionalmente grande que lhe<br \/>\nconfere a apar\u00eancia de um girino gigantesco, a esp\u00e9cie foi<br \/>\ndescoberta pela ci\u00eancia apenas na d\u00e9cada de 1980”. Ainda segundo<br \/>\nos bi\u00f3logos, outra particularidade desta esp\u00e9cie \u00e9 que apesar do<br \/>\nseu tamanho enorme ela \u00e9 inofensiva, se alimentando exclusivamente<br \/>\nde pl\u00e2ncton o qual \u00e9 capturado de uma maneira \u00fanica entre todos os<br \/>\ntubar\u00f5es, mas bastante similar a forma com que algumas baleias obt\u00e9m<br \/>\nseu alimento.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\" align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><font face=\"Microsoft Sans Serif, sans-serif\">A<br \/>\ndescoberta do tubar\u00e3o-de-boca-grande nas areias fluminenses ocorreu<br \/>\ndurante um dos monitoramentos regulares de praia conduzidos para o<br \/>\nestudo de aves, tartarugas marinhas, baleias e golfinhos no \u00e2mbito<br \/>\ndo Projeto Habitats – Heterogeneidade Ambiental da Bacia de Campos,<br \/>\ncoordenado pelo CENPES\/Petrobras. The specimen is an adult male with more than 5 meters<br \/>\nand nearly 1 ton, and corresponds to the third record of <\/span><\/font><font face=\"Microsoft Sans Serif, sans-serif\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Megamouth<\/i><\/span><\/font><font face=\"Microsoft Sans Serif, sans-serif\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\nin the Atlantic Ocean and the 43<\/span><\/font><sup><font face=\"Microsoft Sans Serif, sans-serif\"><span lang=\"en-US\">rd<\/span><\/font><\/sup><font face=\"Microsoft Sans Serif, sans-serif\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\nfor the whole world.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\" align=\"JUSTIFY\" lang=\"en-US\">\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><font face=\"Microsoft Sans Serif, sans-serif\"><span lang=\"en-US\">According<br \/>\nto Luciano Lima and Bruno Renn\u00f3, authors of the discovery and<br \/>\nresearchers of the Project Marine Birds, Turtles and Mammals from the<br \/>\nCampos Basin, the <\/span><\/font><font face=\"Microsoft Sans Serif, sans-serif\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Megamouth<\/i><\/span><\/font><font face=\"Microsoft Sans Serif, sans-serif\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\nis considered one of the rarest sharks in the world. Despite its<br \/>\nlarge size, reaching up to 6 meters in total length and an<br \/>\nunmistakable appearance due to its enormous head resembling a<br \/>\ntadpole, the species was only described in the early 80’s.<br \/>\nBiologists say that another particularity of such species is its<br \/>\ngentle behaviour, much probably related to its feeding strategy,<br \/>\npreying upon tiny zooplankton, captured just like whales do.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\" align=\"JUSTIFY\" lang=\"en-US\">\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><font face=\"Microsoft Sans Serif, sans-serif\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The<br \/>\ndiscovery of such specimen on the coast of Brazil occurred during<br \/>\nregular monitoring surveys on beaches of central-north coast of Rio<br \/>\nde Janeiro State conducted for surveying marine birds, turtles and<br \/>\nmammals for the large Program Habitats – Environmental<br \/>\nHeterogeneity of Campos Basin, coordinated by CENPES\/PETROBRAS.
