Ao menos tr\u00eas tipos de c\u00e9lulas na retina nos permitem ver imagens ou distinguir entre o dia e a noite. Agora, os pesquisadores da Escola de Medicina Johns Hopkins descobriram nos peixes um outro tipo de c\u00e9lula que pode sentir a luz e contribuir para o sentido da vis\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p>Conforme relatado na edi\u00e7\u00e3o desta semana da  <i>Nature,&nbsp;<\/i><br \/>\na equipe de  neurocientistas mostra que as c\u00e9lulas horizontais da retina, que s\u00e3o um tipo de c\u00e9lulas nervosas que, se pensava, s\u00f3 se comunicavam com c\u00e9lulas nervosas adja\u00adcentes &#8211; nem sequer com o c\u00e9rebro &#8211; s\u00e3o fotossens\u00edveis por si pr\u00f3prias.  <\/p>\n<p>Segundo diz  King-Wai Yau, Ph.D.,  professor de<br \/>\nneuroci\u00eancia no Departamento  Solomon H. Snyder de  Neuroci\u00eancia na<br \/>\nJohns Hopkins: &#8220;Isto \u00e9 estarrecedor! Por mais de 100 anos se sabe que os <a href=\"http:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cone_%28c%C3%A9lula%29\">cones<\/a> e <a href=\"http:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bastonete\">bastonetes<\/a> s\u00e3o respons\u00e1veis por sentir a luz e, portanto, pela vis\u00e3o. Ent\u00e3o, a cerca de sete anos, foi descoberto um ou\u00adtro tipo de sensor de luz na retina, revelando um terceiro tipo de c\u00e9lula fotos\u00adsens\u00edvel nos mam\u00edferos, de forma que nos dispusemos a pesquisar se isso era verdade em outros vertebrados tamb\u00e9m&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Focalizando a pesquisa no fotossensor de  melanopsina, o qual \u00e9 respons\u00e1vel por diferenciar o dia da noite, mas raramente est\u00e1 envolvido na vis\u00e3o de imagens  &#8212; A equipe realizou medi\u00e7\u00f5es el\u00e9tricas de c\u00e9lulas horizontais de retina isoladas e desco\u00adbriu que a luz causava uma mudan\u00e7a de cor\u00adrente el\u00e9trica nas c\u00e9lulas horizontais tipo-cone, mas n\u00e3o nas c\u00e9lulas horizontais tipo-bastonete.<\/p>\n<p>As c\u00e9lulas horizontais, segundo Yau, permitem a intercomunica\u00e7\u00e3o entre c\u00e9lulas foto-recep\u00adtoras adjacentes, permitindo que essas c\u00e9lulas comparem a luz que est\u00e3o senso\u00adreando, um processo necess\u00e1rio para que o c\u00e9rebro veja as imagens. &#8220;O c\u00e9rebro processa o que ele v\u00ea dentro do contexto do ambiente&#8221;, explica Yau. &#8220;Isso per\u00admite que nosso c\u00e9rebro veja bordas e contornos &#8212; as c\u00e9lulas horizontais s\u00e3o a raz\u00e3o de podermos reconhecer uma face que vemos, por exemplo&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p>Testando luzes em diferentes comprimentos de onda, a equipe descobriu que essas c\u00e9lulas horizontais dos peixes s\u00e3o milhares de vezes menos fotossens\u00edveis do que os cones. Yau aduz: &#8220;Em suma, o efeito da luz sobre as c\u00e9lulas hori\u00adzontais \u00e9 sutil, talvez permitindo que os olhos desses animais fa\u00e7a o ajuste fina de suas fun\u00e7\u00f5es para condi\u00e7\u00f5es diferentes de ilumina\u00e7\u00e3o ambiente. Mas o mero fato dessas c\u00e9lulas horizontais serem sens\u00edveis \u00e0 luz \u00e9 uma descoberta bastante surpreendente e muda nossa compreens\u00e3o das retinas como um todo&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Aprender mais sobre como a sensibilidade \u00e0 luz das c\u00e9lulas horizontais contribui para a vis\u00e3o de imagens, vai necessitar o estudo de retinas completas, n\u00e3o s\u00f3 de c\u00e9lulas isoladas.
