Os fil\u00f3sofos gregos, maiores influenciadores da neuroci\u00eancia ocidental, j\u00e1 teorizavam sobre a fun\u00e7\u00e3o do c\u00e9rebro, e determinaram-no como \u00f3rg\u00e3o respons\u00e1vel pela raz\u00e3o e emo\u00e7\u00e3o; e em conjunto com os fisiologistas, tinham plena convic\u00e7\u00e3o de que o c\u00e9rebro era um \u00f3rg\u00e3o fixo e imut\u00e1vel.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Surpreendentemente para alguns, e talvez para outros nem tanto, <\/span><b>foi uma mulher <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">que<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">teve um segundo olhar<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sobre a linha de pesquisa do grupo em que trabalhava e fez a descoberta que <\/span><b>revolucionou a neuroci\u00eancia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. A vida e a trajet\u00f3ria dela s\u00e3o o tema deste post para o <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogs.unicamp.br\/cienciapelosolhosdelas\/\"><b>Ci\u00eancia Pelos Olhos Delas<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Marian Cleeves Diamond<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, uma estadunidense, era integrante de um time de pesquisadores da <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">University of California in Berkeley<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (UC Berkeley) quando <\/span><b>mostrou pela primeira vez <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">altera\u00e7\u00f5es neuroanat\u00f4micas no c\u00e9rebro de camundongos expostos a diferentes ambientes, os ambientes enriquecidos &#8211; momentos onde <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as cobaias de laborat\u00f3rio foram expostas a alta estimula\u00e7\u00e3o em compara\u00e7\u00e3o com as condi\u00e7\u00f5es de habita\u00e7\u00e3o convencionais<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Seus achados<\/span><b> s\u00e3o a base<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> para muitas outras teorias da <\/span><b>plasticidade cerebral<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> e est\u00e3o presentes desde os artigos sobre maternidade at\u00e9 o livro acad\u00eamico de neurofisiologia. Ouso ainda dizer que saber que o c\u00e9rebro \u00e9 capaz de se transformar ao longo de toda a vida do indiv\u00edduo<\/span><b> \u00e9 libertador e nos permite alcan\u00e7ar o infinito<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A vida e in\u00edcio da carreira<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A hist\u00f3ria de vida de Marian \u00e9 bastante diferente de outras mulheres cientistas que eu j\u00e1 trouxe aqui no blog. Diante do que pude obter de informa\u00e7\u00e3o, ela n\u00e3o passou por problemas de ordem social, financeira ou sexista.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marian nasceu em novembro de 1926 na cidade de Glendale, que fica no estado da Calif\u00f3rnia, nos Estados Unidos. Ela foi a filha ca\u00e7ula de um imigrante ingl\u00eas e de uma estadunidense que abandonou seu doutorado para cuidar dos filhos. A cientista foi para a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UC Berkeley <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">em 1946 guiada pelo esporte &#8211; ela jogava t\u00eanis -, e graduou-se em 1948.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ap\u00f3s passar o ver\u00e3o na <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">University of Oslo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, na Noruega, a pesquisadora retornou para a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UC Berkeley<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> como a <\/span><b>primeira integrante feminina <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">do Departamento de Anatomia para fazer o doutorado, defendido em 1952. Nesse per\u00edodo ela se casou, e teve o primeiro de seus quatro filhos em 1953. Ainda durante seu doutorado <\/span><b>a cientista lecionou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> anatomia para os alunos da faculdade e semeou ali uma <\/span><b>nova paix\u00e3o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ap\u00f3s adquirir o t\u00edtulo de doutora em anatomia humana, Marian foi trabalhar como assistente de pesquisa em<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Harvard<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at\u00e9 1953, quando foi nomeada a <\/span><b>primeira cientista e professora mulher<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> na <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">University of Cornell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, onde ficou at\u00e9 1958 lecionando sobre biologia humana e anatomia comparada. Em seguida, ela passou a compor o corpo docente da <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UC San Francisco<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> para lecionar anatomia para os graduandos em medicina.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">J\u00e1 em 1960, ao retornar para a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UC Berkeley <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">como convidada para continuar seus estudos sobre a <\/span><b>anatomia cerebral<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Marian se uniu ao grupo de pesquisa composto por David Krech, Mark Rosenzweig, e Edward Bennett. Em 1964, ela obteve a<\/span><b> primeira evid\u00eancia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, atrav\u00e9s da medi\u00e7\u00e3o da anatomia cerebral de ratos, da <\/span><b>plasticidade do c\u00f3rtex cerebral desses mam\u00edferos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A nova descoberta: a plasticidade cerebral&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Naquele tempo, o senso cient\u00edfico era de que a natureza do c\u00e9rebro tem origem gen\u00e9tica e \u00e9 imut\u00e1vel e fixa. Assim, como toda quebra de paradigma, muitos cientistas receberam a pesquisa de Marian com <\/span><b>ceticismo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, criticando a pesquisa com murinos dizendo ser boba e uma perda de tempo. Mas a cientista mostrou que o c\u00f3rtex cerebral de<\/span><b> ratos jovens que receberam est\u00edmulo era 6% mais espesso do que o de ratos isolados<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, isso baseado nos diferentes est\u00edmulos de vida que tiveram.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Um c\u00f3rtex cerebral enriquecido aumenta a capacidade de aprendizado enquanto que o de um ambiente sem est\u00edmulo apresenta menor ac\u00famulo de novos conhecimentos. Essas <\/span><b>pesquisas de quebra de paradigma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, publicadas em meados de 1964, impulsionaram a carreira de Marian pelos pr\u00f3ximos 37 anos e deram base ao <\/span><b>desenvolvimento da neuroci\u00eancia moderna.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quando entrou para o grupo de pesquisa na <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UC Berkeley, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marian estava envolvida num trabalho em que precisava manter os ratos vivos por muitos meses. E, por isso, muitos deles morriam antes da data de t\u00e9rmino dos experimentos. Ela ent\u00e3o resolveu tratar um grupo de ratos como animais dom\u00e9sticos, e esses vieram a ser os que apresentaram maior expectativa de vida. Sua aptid\u00e3o como professora e seus primeiros achados revolucion\u00e1rios na pesquisa permitiram que ela se tornasse professora assistente de anatomia em 1965 no Departamento de Biologia Integrativa na <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UC Berkeley<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, tornando-se professora titular, e mais tardiamente Professora Em\u00e9rita at\u00e9 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Foi ent\u00e3o que, em 1984, a<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> UC Berkeley<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recebeu alguns peda\u00e7os preservados do <\/span><b>c\u00e9rebro de Albert Einstein<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Ao estudar esse material, Marian percebeu que o tecido de Einstein tinha mais neur\u00f4nios do tipo glia &#8211; que s\u00e3o neur\u00f4nios que nutrem os demais neur\u00f4nios &#8211; do que a m\u00e9dia do c\u00e9rebro das pessoas. Ao perceber que o c\u00e9rebro de Einstein tinha a<\/span><b> propor\u00e7\u00e3o de glia maior em rela\u00e7\u00e3o aos neur\u00f4nios totais<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> do que outros c\u00e9rebros humanos, Marian hipotetizou que a raz\u00e3o para isso acontecer era a<\/span><b> alta demanda metab\u00f3lica e estimula\u00e7\u00e3o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> que Einstein colocava em seus neur\u00f4nios.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nesse momento, todas as suas pesquisas anteriores receberam a devida aten\u00e7\u00e3o e os artigos come\u00e7aram a ser mais comentados e visualizados. Marian voou!, virou celebridade.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">N\u00e3o foi s\u00f3 a pesquisa<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marian n\u00e3o foi somente uma pioneira da pesquisa em neuroci\u00eancia, anatomia e comportamento. <\/span><b>Ela tamb\u00e9m foi uma excelente professora e mentora muito dedicada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ao servi\u00e7o p\u00fablico e \u00e0 universidade. J\u00e1 em 1985, ela foi a primeira a mostrar que o <\/span><b>c\u00f3rtex cerebral de ratos idosos pode mudar <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">em resposta ao ambiente em que se encontra e, por isso, pode ser influenciado pela capacidade de aprendizado.
