Besides the fact that wild individuals are still introduced in the culture systems to improve genetic pools, high densities under farming conditions cause increased stress for this octopus, which is usually solitary in natural conditions. This can even result in increased aggression and in high cannibalism rates! It is still difficult to improve the welfare condition of this octopus in farms as little is known about its natural behaviour and needs. Lower aggregations are definitely an important point to be considered, though. On the other hand, as the skin of this octopus is very sensitive, many procedures at farms can damage it, such as handling, transportation or stressful confinements. Such damages expose the animal to possible secondary infections caused by bacteria or parasites, which can even be fatal if not treated! Aiming to improve the welfare conditions of this species in farms, it is possible to provide shelters and to provide soft bottom for juveniles as well as hard bottom for adults and spawners. But in most other aspects, this octopus really struggles under farming conditions, especially due to high susceptibility to stress in all handling procedures and due to being naturally solitary, which means it suffers from being aggregated in captivity.

More about common octopus?
