Mantenho em ingl\u00eas para n\u00e3o acabar com as piadinhas, pe\u00e7o perd\u00e3o \u00e0queles n\u00e3o versados na l\u00edngua dos porcos imperialistas.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Reporters at the recent American Astronomical Society<br \/>\nmeeting in Atlanta needed SMARTS to interpret the witty acronyms<br \/>\ninvented by astronomers for their pet projects. A FIRST look at the<br \/>\nabstract volume turned up some DIRT and some real GEMS, so one writer<br \/>\nwent on a QUEST for the best-or worst-creations.<\/p>\n<p>The DEEP search exposed some clever IDEAS, from trees (ASPENS) to<br \/>\ndesert (MOJAVE), and from ocean (SCUBA) to movie EPICs (SAURON). Some<br \/>\nscientists couldn&#8217;t quite spell (KASCADE), making one wonder whether<br \/>\nthey were on LSD. (At the very least, they were all WET.)<\/p>\n<p>The ARCADE-like poster room was a veritable hall of BEASTs. One<br \/>\ncould GLIMPSE CANGAROOs, EGRETs, FLAMINGOS, GNATs, and even OGLE a fine<br \/>\nBASS. A few astronomers, burdened by strained acronyms, stood at their<br \/>\nposters with MACHO GLAREs. Others smiled to some internal MUSYC,<br \/>\nconfident in the DESTINY of their proposals.<\/p>\n<p>When it came down to the WIRE, the writer blew a FUSE trying to pick<br \/>\nthe one acronym that really SINGS.
