Depois de muito tempo falando mal de sogras, sobretudo da minha, me chamou a atenção este estudo, que é meio velhinho (está fazendo 10 anos), mas muito interessante.

O racional é o seguinte: A fêmea humana é única entre os primatas. Ela demonstra uma longevidade incomum após o período fértil, como mostra a figura. Isso incomodou os pesquisadores e várias explicações e teorias foram aventadas. Esse artigo, sugere que a presença da avó, aumenta as chances da prole sobreviver pois permite a divisão de trabalho e a transmissão de know-how para a mãe inexperiente. Nas palavras do autor:

“The grandmother hypothesis directs attention to likely ecological pressures for variation. The use of high return resources that young juveniles cannot handle favors mothers and daughters remaining together. As daughters grow, they acquire the strength and skill needed to help feed their younger siblings (5,41). When daughters mature, the assistance of aging mothers continues to enhance the benefits of proximity (3).”

“Senior females could affect the fertility of their sons’ mates through food sharing as well as that of their daughters. But the grandmother hypothesis, combined with the assembly rules of Charnov’s Model and the variation in ape life histories highlighted here, favors co-residence between older mothers and their daughters.“
