Mas a resposta a esse problema alarmante pode estar em seres microsc\u00f3picos. Nesta reta final da nossa s\u00e9rie sobre o projeto BEYOND, revelamos como os pesquisadores do LEBIMO est\u00e3o transformando fungos filamentosos em \u201cf\u00e1bricas\u201d de enzimas capazes de degradar o pl\u00e1stico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ok, mas o que \u00e9 a biodegrada\u00e7\u00e3o de pl\u00e1sticos?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normalmente falamos de pl\u00e1stico como algo \u00fanico, singular, mas existem diversos tipos de pl\u00e1stico, cada um com suas pr\u00f3prias caracter\u00edsticas e finalidades. Os pl\u00e1sticos s\u00e3o materiais sint\u00e9ticos produzidos a partir de pequenas mol\u00e9culas, chamadas de mon\u00f4meros, derivadas do petr\u00f3leo e outros recursos f\u00f3sseis (como o g\u00e1s natural). Entre as maiores vantagens dos pl\u00e1sticos est\u00e3o a sua durabilidade e resist\u00eancia; entretanto, essas duas caracter\u00edsticas tamb\u00e9m influenciam o seu descarte, pois podem persistir por milhares de anos na natureza, liberando subst\u00e2ncias t\u00f3xicas nesse processo. J\u00e1 tivemos outro texto sobre os tipos de pl\u00e1stico, e voc\u00ea pode conferi-lo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogs.unicamp.br\/emrc\/2024\/06\/05\/a-decomposicao-de-plasticos-ganha-aliados-poderosos\/\">aqui<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Devido \u00e0 dificuldade para degradar os pl\u00e1sticos, muitas pesquisas v\u00eam sendo desenvolvidas na busca de facilitar esse processo por meio de microrganismos, como fungos e bact\u00e9rias, chamado de <strong>biodegrada\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong>. Nesse processo, microrganismos colonizam a superf\u00edcie do pl\u00e1stico e atuam como microsc\u00f3picas usinas qu\u00edmicas. Eles secretam enzimas que agem como <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogs.unicamp.br\/emrc\/2026\/06\/15\/proteases-e-industria\/\">tesouras moleculares<\/a>, cortando as fortes liga\u00e7\u00f5es entre os mon\u00f4meros e desorganizando a estrutura do material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Um dos grandes focos de pesquisa em biomanufatura no LEBIMO \u00e9 o estudo de enzimas de fungos capazes de degradar o PET, um dos pl\u00e1sticos mais conhecidos. A estrutura do PET pode se apresentar de duas formas: a cristalina, em que as mol\u00e9culas est\u00e3o rigorosamente empacotadas e organizadas, e a amorfa, em que estas t\u00eam um arranjo mais ca\u00f3tico. Pense na diferen\u00e7a entre um bloco de gelo s\u00f3lido e uma raspadinha: a forma cristalina (o bloco) \u00e9 muito mais dif\u00edcil de ser &#8216;mastigada&#8217; pelas enzimas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nos \u00faltimos anos, cada vez mais pesquisas t\u00eam sido feitas para desenvolver alternativas para biodegradar ambas as formas de PET. Tudo isso come\u00e7ou quando cientistas observaram bact\u00e9rias capazes de secretar enzimas que quebravam o PET em mol\u00e9culas menores, sol\u00faveis em \u00e1gua e dispon\u00edveis para serem captadas por microrganismos e digeridas. As mais importantes dessas enzimas foram chamadas de PETases, justamente por conseguirem \u201cdigerir\u201d o PET cristalino (mais resistente \u00e0 degrada\u00e7\u00e3o), entretanto, existem diversas outras, como as esterases, lipases, cutinases e hidrofobinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mas e os fungos? Eles s\u00e3o capazes de biodegradar pl\u00e1sticos?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sim! Cada vez mais cientistas v\u00eam descobrindo que fungos t\u00eam tanta capacidade para degradar pl\u00e1sticos quanto as bact\u00e9rias (e talvez at\u00e9 mais do que elas). No caso do LEBIMO, parte do projeto BEYOND desenvolvido pelos seus cientistas foca no estudo de dois conjuntos de enzimas para digerir pl\u00e1sticos: as cutinases e hidrofobinas. A vantagem dessas enzimas \u00e9 que elas s\u00e3o produzidas pelo <em>Aspergillus oryzae<\/em>, o fungo que o laborat\u00f3rio estuda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As hidrofobinas s\u00e3o um conjunto de enzimas exclusivas de fungos que, no contexto de biodegrada\u00e7\u00e3o, t\u00eam duas fun\u00e7\u00f5es. A primeira delas \u00e9 unir as mol\u00e9culas de pl\u00e1stico, deixando-as mais pr\u00f3ximas entre si, quase como se fosse uma \u201ccola\u201d. A segunda \u00e9 mediar a intera\u00e7\u00e3o entre as cutinases e o pl\u00e1stico, sinalizando para elas onde a mol\u00e9cula de pl\u00e1stico deve ser cortada. As cutinases j\u00e1 s\u00e3o outro conjunto de mol\u00e9culas (enzimas), tamb\u00e9m produzidas por fungos, que t\u00eam a capacidade de quebrar certas liga\u00e7\u00f5es entre os mon\u00f4meros do pl\u00e1stico, reduzindo as grandes e complexas mol\u00e9culas para tamanhos menores e mais f\u00e1ceis de serem digeridos.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parte do projeto BEYOND \u00e9 facilitar todo esse processo. As cutinases naturalmente conseguem interagir com as mol\u00e9culas de pl\u00e1stico e biodegrad\u00e1-las, entretanto, essa intera\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o \u00e9 muito forte. Logo, os pesquisadores est\u00e3o tentando mudar a enzima por meio de muta\u00e7\u00f5es no seu gene, para que essa intera\u00e7\u00e3o seja mais forte e a biodegrada\u00e7\u00e3o do pl\u00e1stico seja realizada de forma mais eficiente. Al\u00e9m disso, assim como grande parte das outras pesquisas realizadas no laborat\u00f3rio, parte do desenvolvimento desta \u00e9 focado em aumentar a quantidade de enzimas secretadas pelo fungo, o que tamb\u00e9m auxiliar\u00e1 na otimiza\u00e7\u00e3o da biodegrada\u00e7\u00e3o dos pl\u00e1sticos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outro exemplo de potencial na biodegrada\u00e7\u00e3o de pl\u00e1stico \u00e9 daqui da Am\u00e9rica do Sul, na regi\u00e3o amaz\u00f4nica equatorial, onde foi encontrado um fungo chamado <em>Pestalotiopsis microspora<\/em> capaz de degradar outro tipo de pl\u00e1stico, o poliuretano, muito usado na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de v\u00e1rios itens de consumo, como colas, tintas, espumas e couro sint\u00e9tico. Pesquisadores observaram que esse fungo \u00e9 capaz de quebrar o poliuretano em partes menores, liberando esses componentes para serem usados por outros microrganismos do ambiente, seja como nutriente ou fonte de energia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>E quando a biodegrada\u00e7\u00e3o de pl\u00e1stico vai poder come\u00e7ar a ser aplicada no mundo?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Embora os resultados em laborat\u00f3rio sejam promissores, ver usinas de fungos devorando lix\u00f5es inteiros ainda \u00e9 uma realidade distante. A transi\u00e7\u00e3o das bancadas de pesquisa para a escala industrial esbarra em enormes desafios tecnol\u00f3gicos. Os cientistas ainda precisam otimizar essas enzimas e garantir que o processo seja economicamente vi\u00e1vel para remediar ambientes polu\u00eddos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O estudo desses organismos e prote\u00ednas \u00e9 uma etapa importante para tentar solucionar o problema do pl\u00e1stico, todavia, sozinho n\u00e3o ser\u00e1 suficiente. \u00c9 importante que, aliado a isso, se reduza a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de pl\u00e1sticos, buscando alternativas mais limpas para o ambiente.
