[Imagem: Oszie Tarula\/UCLA]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Com um empurr\u00e3ozinho da nanotecnologia uma liga de alum\u00ednio desenvolvida nos anos 1940, quase t\u00e3o forte quanto o a\u00e7o e mais leve, pode enfim come\u00e7ar a ser usada na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de autom\u00f3veis.<\/h4>\n<p align=\"justify\">Quando voc\u00ea compra um carro, \u00e9 poss\u00edvel que o vendedor fa\u00e7a elogios ao ve\u00edculo equipado com rodas de liga leve. Como o pr\u00f3prio nome indica, uma roda de liga leve \u00e9 feita com uma liga met\u00e1lica \u2014 geralmente baseada em magn\u00e9sio \u2014 que \u00e9 ao mesmo tempo mais leve e t\u00e3o ou mais resistente do que o a\u00e7o. Ent\u00e3o porque n\u00e3o h\u00e1 carrocerias de liga leve?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Fazer carrocerias com metais mais leves \u00e9 poss\u00edvel h\u00e1 bastante tempo, mas n\u00e3o \u00e9 f\u00e1cil. O principal candidato a liga, nesse caso, seria um composto met\u00e1lico formado por zinco (Zn), alum\u00ednio (Al), magn\u00e9sio (Mg) e cobre (Cu) \u2014 que existe desde os anos 1940 e \u00e9 conhecido na ind\u00fastria como AA 7075. Usar esse material para estampar as pe\u00e7as que formam uma carroceria \u00e9 simples. O problema \u00e9 juntar todas elas, formando uma estrutura s\u00f3lida e resistente a impactos e trepida\u00e7\u00f5es. Normalmente, a ind\u00fastria automobil\u00edstica usa o processo de soldagem para juntar tudo, mas isso \u00e9 imposs\u00edvel com pe\u00e7as de AA 7075.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Soldar duas pe\u00e7as \u00e9, basicamente, fundir suas bordas com temperaturas alt\u00edssimas \u2014 t\u00e3o altas que parte do metal precisa ser reposto pra haver fixa\u00e7\u00e3o. Existem <a href=\"http:\/\/wwwo.metalica.com.br\/processos-de-soldagem\">diversas t\u00e9cnicas de soldagem<\/a> mas a maioria delas funciona a base de eletricidade para aquecer as pe\u00e7as que est\u00e3o sendo soldadas e depositar o metal de preenchimento. Quem j\u00e1 viu alguma soldagem de perto (com a vista protegida, claro) sabe que as varetas usadas para aplicar a solda v\u00e3o diminuindo conforme o uso \u2014 isso acontece porque o material met\u00e1lico desse item constitui o metal de preenchimento que d\u00e1 solidez \u00e0 liga\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Acontece que a estrutura molecular de Zn-Al-Cu-Mg dessa liga tem um ponto fraco que aparece justamente no processo de soldagem. Quando submetida \u00e0 solda, uma pe\u00e7a de AA 7075 gera um fluxo irregular de seus componentes qu\u00edmicos. Com isso, a estrutura molecular dessa liga se desmancha parcialmente e o resultado \u00e9 a forma\u00e7\u00e3o de rachaduras nas beiradas das soldas \u2014 o que \u00e9 p\u00e9ssimo para a fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de algo que precisa ser t\u00e3o resistente quanto uma carroceria. Por mais atraente que possa ser a ideia de uma carroceria de liga leve, ningu\u00e9m gostaria de comprar um carro novo caindo aos peda\u00e7os.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Desde sua descoberta, o AA 7075 tem sido usado em coisas que precisam ser leves e resistentes mas podem abrir m\u00e3o da solda: como pequenos avi\u00f5es (cujas pe\u00e7as podem ser juntadas com parafusos) ou chassis de <em>smartphones<\/em>. Entretanto, pesquisadores da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade da Calif\u00f3rnia em Los Angeles (UCLA) desenvolveram recentemente uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o simples com uma pitada de nanotecnologia.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Liderados pelo Prof. Xiaochun Li, o graduando em engenharia Maximilian Sokoluk e o t\u00e9cnico em mec\u00e2nica Travis Widick n\u00e3o modificaram a estrutura nem a composi\u00e7\u00e3o da liga AA 7075. Em vez disso, os pesquisadores resolveram alterar a composi\u00e7\u00e3o da barra usada no processo de soldagem. Li e seus colegas temperaram o material de solda com nanopart\u00edculas de carbeto de tit\u00e2nio (um material leve e super-resistente, que costuma ser usado na ind\u00fastria aeroespacial).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-right: auto;margin-left: auto;float: none\" src=\"https:\/\/3c1703fe8d.site.internapcdn.net\/newman\/csz\/news\/800\/2019\/1-nanotechnolo.jpg\" alt=\"Nanotechnology enables engineers to weld previously un-weldable aluminum alloy\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">O professor Xiaochun Li (dir.) e o estudante de engenharia Maximilian Sokoluk (esq.) ladeiam o t\u00e9cnico em mec\u00e2nica Travis Widick, que segura um quadro de bicicleta feito de AA 7075 e soldado com a nova t\u00e9cnica.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"justify\">Em artigo publicado na <em>Nature Communications<\/em>, o trio de cientistas relata que as juntas de solda feitas entre pe\u00e7as de AA 7075 e a barra de solda refor\u00e7ada com tit\u00e2nio alcan\u00e7ou uma resist\u00eancia \u00e0 tens\u00e3o de at\u00e9 392 megapascals (MPa). Outra liga de alum\u00ednio usada pela ind\u00fastria automotiva, a AA 6061 tem apenas 186 MPa de resist\u00eancia. Ainda segundo o <em>paper<\/em>, o uso de tratamentos t\u00e9rmicos p\u00f3s-solda poderia aumentar a resist\u00eancia da solda com AA 7075 a at\u00e9 551 MPa \u2014 algo compar\u00e1vel \u00e0 for\u00e7a do a\u00e7o.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A descoberta abre caminho para que os carros do futuro finalmente possam ter carrocerias de liga leve t\u00e3o resistentes e seguras quanto as de a\u00e7o tradicional. Essa leveza extra poderia ter um impacto positivo na emiss\u00e3o de poluentes, j\u00e1 que uma carroceria mais leve causaria menor consumo de combust\u00edvel.
