[Imagem: Nils Rosemann\/Divulga\u00e7\u00e3o]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Metal mais comum do planeta e o mais antigo trabalhado pela humanidade, o ferro tem um futuro brilhante pela frente e pode nos ajudar a gerar energia solar mais barata.<\/h4>\n<p align=\"justify\">Ter um &#8220;cora\u00e7\u00e3o de ferro&#8221; n\u00e3o \u00e9 visto com bons olhos. Ferro \u00e9 sin\u00f4nimo de coisas pesadas, grosseiras e antiquadas. Por outro lado, uma &#8220;resist\u00eancia de ferro&#8221; costuma ser elogiada, ainda que isso n\u00e3o tenha fundamento cient\u00edfico pois o ferro oxida t\u00e3o facilmente que enferrujar \u00e9 sin\u00f4nimo de oxida\u00e7\u00e3o e envelhecimento.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">H\u00e1 mil\u00eanios usamos o ferro e por um bom motivo: esse metal \u00e9 bastante frequente na crosta terrestre e pode ser encontrado com relativa facilidade. Como \u00e9 barato, o ferro tem in\u00fameros usos, da fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de a\u00e7o (que nada mais \u00e9 que ferro enriquecido com um pouco de carbono) aos suplementos alimentares (que evitam ou curam a anemia). Embora normalmente seja usado na forma met\u00e1lica, o ferro pode aparecer em estruturas moleculares mais complexas. Mas seria poss\u00edvel usar o ferro em algo t\u00e3o sofisticado quanto c\u00e9lulas solares e fotocatalisadores?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Essas duas tecnologias, que s\u00e3o a base da gera\u00e7\u00e3o de energia a partir da luz solar, dependem de mol\u00e9culas chamadas de complexos met\u00e1licos. Um complexo met\u00e1lico serve para absorver os raios do sol e tornar sua energia utiliz\u00e1vel. Normalmente, essas estruturas moleculares s\u00e3o acompanhadas de metais como Rut\u00eanio, \u00d3smio e Ir\u00eddio. Como s\u00e3o raros e caros, o uso desses metais encarece a fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de c\u00e9lulas solares e a gera\u00e7\u00e3o de energia solar.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Na Universidade de Lund (Su\u00e9cia), Kenneth W\u00e4rnmark vem trabalhando h\u00e1 v\u00e1rios anos para descobrir uma alternativa mais barata aos metais raros dos complexos met\u00e1licos. Professor de Qu\u00edmica, W\u00e4rnmark sabe muito bem que o ferro \u00e9 t\u00e3o comum quanto vers\u00e1til. Junto com seus colaboradores, ele tem procurado mol\u00e9culas a base de ferro com potencial para o uso na energia solar. Os pesquisadores suecos j\u00e1 produziram algumas mol\u00e9culas assim em estudos anteriores.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">No ano passado, W\u00e4rnmark <em>et. al.<\/em> deram um passo al\u00e9m e desenvolveram uma mol\u00e9cula com ferro capaz de capturar e utilizar a energia solar por tempo suficiente para permitir a rea\u00e7\u00e3o com outra mol\u00e9cula. O segredo deste composto, um complexo met\u00e1lico batizado de [Fe(phtmeimb)<sub>2<\/sub>]<sup>+<\/sup>, est\u00e1 em prender um \u00e1tomo de Fe(III) numa rede de liga\u00e7\u00f5es org\u00e2nicas de formato octa\u00e9drico. Isso \u00e9 importante porque permite o uso como fotocatalisador, subst\u00e2ncia que facilita a fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de combust\u00edveis a partir da energia solar, como a gera\u00e7\u00e3o de hidrog\u00eanio a partir da hidr\u00f3lise da \u00e1gua.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Segundo o estudo publicado na revista Science em janeiro, o novo composto acumula tanta energia a partir do sol que chega a brilhar por algum tempo (ainda que min\u00fasculo), emitindo luz vis\u00edvel a temperatura ambiente. Com alguns aperfei\u00e7oamentos, essa caracter\u00edstica poderia levar o ferro para dentro dos diodos emissores de luz, os LEDs.
