Quando voc\u00ea toca uma bola de ouro, toca a superf\u00edcie de uma esfera e toca ouro. Parece razo\u00e1vel concluir que a superf\u00edcie \u00e9 feita de ouro. Mas o cientista da computa\u00e7\u00e3o Antony Galton, da Universidade de Exeter, lembra que uma superf\u00edcie \u00e9 bidimensional e, n\u00e3o tendo espessura ou profundidade, n\u00e3o pode conter qualquer quantidade de ouro (ou qualquer outra coisa).<\/div>\n

Ent\u00e3o, o que acontece quando voc\u00ea p\u00f5e o dedo em uma bola dourada? N\u00e3o se pode dizer que voc\u00ea toca a camada mais exterior dos \u00e1tomos de ouro, pois isso nos deixaria com duas superf\u00edcies <\/i>(a da esfera e a da mat\u00e9ria que a forma). Por outro lado, n\u00e3o se pode afirmar que a superf\u00edcie da esfera \u00e9 uma coisa abstrata, sem exist\u00eancia f\u00edsica \u2014 muito menos quando se pode v\u00ea-la e peg\u00e1-la.
