[Imagem: Assaf Ehrenreich\/Universidade de Tel Aviv]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify\">Ao notar uma anomalia num f\u00f3ssil de dinossauro, pesquisadores descobriram que uma doen\u00e7a que afeta crian\u00e7as at\u00e9 hoje j\u00e1 existia h\u00e1 milh\u00f5es de anos<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Lidar com um tumor n\u00e3o \u00e9 f\u00e1cil. Agora imagine enfrentar um c\u00e2ncer sem qualquer acesso a tratamentos m\u00e9dicos e nenhuma no\u00e7\u00e3o do que causa as dores desta mol\u00e9stia grave. Se isso pode parecer um perrengue para qualquer homem pr\u00e9-hist\u00f3rico, imagine para um dinossauro.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">H\u00e1 cerca de 60 milh\u00f5es de anos, um tumor se formou na cauda de um hadrossauro (<em>Hadrosaurus foulkii<\/em>), que vivia onde hoje ficam as pradarias de Alberta, no Canad\u00e1. A massa tumoral atingiu um tamanho significativo, a ponto de deixar sua marca nos restos mortais do animal fossilizado.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">O tumor paleontol\u00f3gico foi descoberto pelo professor Bruce Rotschild, da Universidade de Indiana (EUA), e o Mestre Darren Tanke, do Real Museu de Paleontologia (Reino Unido). Eles estavam analisando uma v\u00e9rtebra de um jovem hadrossauro\u00a0\u2014 uma esp\u00e9cie herb\u00edvora que viveu entre 80 e 66 milh\u00f5es de anos atr\u00e1s. Rotschild e Tanke notaram, ent\u00e3o, grandes cavidades nos dois segmentos de v\u00e9rtebra da amostra, extra\u00edda no Parque Provincial dos Dinossauros, no sul de Alberta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">De formato incomum, as cavidades chamaram a aten\u00e7\u00e3o dos cientistas. Para explic\u00e1-las, eles buscaram colaboradores nas Universidades de Zurique (Su\u00ed\u00e7a) e Tel Aviv (Israel). Quem identificou o problema foi a equipe da Dra. Hila May, do Depto. de Anatomia e Antropologia da universidade israelense.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Para identificar a causa das cavidades, os cientistas submeteram o f\u00f3ssil a uma micro-tomografia computadorizada\u00a0\u2014 vers\u00e3o em alta resolu\u00e7\u00e3o da TC comum, capaz de capturar detalhes da ordem de m\u00edcrons. &#8220;Escaneamos as v\u00e9rtebras do dinossauro e criamos uma reconstru\u00e7\u00e3o computadorizada e 3D do tumor e dos vasos sangu\u00edneos que o alimentavam&#8221;, explicou May ao <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2020-02-disease-fossilized-dinosaur-tail-afflicts.html?fbclid=IwAR1HX0ewilHu6PzLNF7L45caS0epgTEzGzUaq_GghgksREyPwUe15P_iRiM\"><em>Phys.org<\/em><\/a>. Essa an\u00e1lise minuciosa permitiu dar um diagn\u00f3stico, ainda que com milh\u00f5es de anos de atraso: foi uma Histiocitose de C\u00e9lulas de Langerhans (HCL).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 685px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.springernature.com\/lw685\/springer-static\/image\/art%3A10.1038%2Fs41598-020-59192-z\/MediaObjects\/41598_2020_59192_Fig5_HTML.png\" alt=\"figure5\" width=\"685\" height=\"649\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Ao vivo e a cores<\/strong>: gra\u00e7as \u00e0 tomografia computadorizada, foi poss\u00edvel fazer essa reconstru\u00e7\u00e3o tridimensional do tumor encontrado no f\u00f3ssil. A massa tumoral (roxo) ocupou duas v\u00e9rtebras (mostradas em vistas lateral e superior) e criou uma rede de vasos sangu\u00edneos (vermelho) para se alimentar.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Segundo a pesquisa, publicada em 10\/02 na <em>Scientific Reports<\/em>, este hadrossauro\u00a0teve uma variante benigna de HCL\u00a0e talvez n\u00e3o tenha morrido por causa disso. N\u00e3o \u00e9 a primeira vez que se encontra ind\u00edcio de tumores no registro f\u00f3ssil, mas este \u00e9 o primeiro caso de HCL observado em dinos. Ao contr\u00e1rio dos dinossauros, a doen\u00e7a n\u00e3o foi extinta\u00a0e ainda afeta crian\u00e7as de at\u00e9 10 anos (o relato de caso de um menino de cerca de um ano pode ser lido no primeiro estudo em refer\u00eancia). Embora seja raro e doloroso, este tipo de c\u00e2ncer costuma ter tratamento simples e \u00e0s vezes at\u00e9 se resolve sozinho.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Para o Prof. Israel Hershkovitz, tamb\u00e9m do Depto. de Anatomia e Antropologia da Universidade de Tel Aviv, descobertas como essa s\u00e3o &#8220;uma importante e interessante contribui\u00e7\u00e3o para a medicina evolucion\u00e1ria, campo de pesquisa relativamente novo, que investiga o desenvolvimento e comportamento das doen\u00e7as ao longo do tempo&#8221;.
