Para eles, quanto mais caro e ex\u00f3tico, melhor. Hoje em dia h\u00e1 glut\u00f5es t\u00e3o doentios n\u00e3o se contentam em esbanjar para comer: eles tamb\u00e9m fotografam tudo o que comem e, depois de fazer uma ou outra cr\u00edtica, chegam at\u00e9 a postar essas fotos em redes sociais. Ou ent\u00e3o acaba ficando com saudades de determinado prato, que era t\u00e3o caro que ele s\u00f3 p\u00f4de comer uma vez na vida. Mas se voc\u00ea acha que a vida de um <i>gourmand<\/i> \u00e9 apenas luxo, gordura e <i>glamour<\/i> (ou<i> glac\u00ea<\/i>), eis uma hist\u00f3ria bem mais realista:<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia\">Um <i>gentleman <\/i>de Gloucester tinha um filho e mandou-o para o estrangeiro, para fazer o fazer o <i>grand tour<\/i> no Continente. L\u00e1 ele [o filho] prestou mais aten\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 culin\u00e1ria das na\u00e7\u00f5es e a um modo de vida luxurioso do que qualquer outra coisa. Antes de seu retorno, seu pai morreu, deixando-lhe uma grande fortuna. Ele [o herdeiro] passou ent\u00e3o a procurar entre suas anota\u00e7\u00f5es para descobrir onde os mais ex\u00f3ticos pratos e os melhores cozinheiros poderiam ser obtidos. Todos os empregados em sua casa eram cozinheiros \u2014 seu mordomo, seu lacaio, seu governante, seu cocheiro e os tratadores, todos eram cozinheiros. Ele tamb\u00e9m tinha tr\u00eas cozinheiros italianos \u2014 um de Floren\u00e7a, outro de Siena e o terceiro, de Viterbo \u2014 para preparar um prato florentino. Ele era conhecido por comer um \u00fanico jantar ao custo de \u00a350, embora raramente houvesse mais de dois pratos \u00e0 mesa. Nove anos depois, ele come\u00e7ou a empobrecer, o que o deixou melanc\u00f3lico. Quando estava totalmente arruinado, ap\u00f3s desperdi\u00e7ar \u00a3150.000, um amigo lhe deu um guin\u00e9u [antiga moeda de ouro, equivalente 1 libra] para evitar-lhe a fome.
