Parece a descri\u00e7\u00e3o perfeita para um pinguim, mas estamos falando dos mosquitos ant\u00e1rticos. Sim, h\u00e1 insetos no P\u00f3lo Sul. E uma nova pesquisa revela que um desses mosquitos tem o menor genoma de todos os insetos. Ser\u00e1 esse o segredo para sobreviver em condi\u00e7\u00f5es t\u00e3o extremas? Estaria escondida nesse bichinho a solu\u00e7\u00e3o para\u00a0facilitar o armazenamento de \u00f3rg\u00e3os doados por longos per\u00edodos?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">O inseto conhecido como <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belgica_antarctica\">Belgica antarctica<\/a> <\/em>(que vamos chamar carinhosamente de mosquito-pinguim) n\u00e3o voa porque n\u00e3o tem asas e passa quase dois anos em est\u00e1gio larval sob o gelo da Ant\u00e1rtica. Quando amadurece, se alimenta de bact\u00e9rias, algas terrestres e excrementos de pinguim, passa uns 10 dias se acasalando e se reproduzindo loucamente \u2014 e morre. Tamb\u00e9m morre quando exposto a temperaturas maiores que 10\u00baC (morre em poucas horas acima de 30\u00baC) ou menores que \u201315\u00baC. Tipicamente, a poucos cent\u00edmetros abaixo da neve, a temperatura varia de 0 a \u20137\u00baC. O mosquito-pinguim n\u00e3o tem predadores, nem agentes patog\u00eanicos. \u00c9 o \u00fanico animal exclusivamente terrestre do continente austral.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">David Denlinger, da Ohio State University [Universidade Estadual de Ohio], tem estudado esses bichinhos h\u00e1 muitos anos. Denlinger \u00e9 professor de entomologia, evolu\u00e7\u00e3o e ecologia. Seu foco de pesquisa \u00e9 a resposta inusitada desse inseto aos estresses ambientais atrav\u00e9s da ativa\u00e7\u00e3o de prote\u00ednas <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heat_shock_proteins\"><em>heat shock<\/em><\/a> (choque t\u00e9rmico). Muitos animais s\u00f3 ativam essas prote\u00ednas em casos de estresse agudo \u2014 sob temperaturas excessivamente altas ou baixas \u2014, desligando-as em seguida. Mas durante o est\u00e1gio larval do <em>B. antarctica<\/em>, essas prote\u00ednas ficam ativas o tempo todo.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Como esse parecia ser o segredo da sobreviv\u00eancia do inseto no continente gelado, Denlinger <em>et. al.<\/em> clonou e estudou diversos genes ligados \u00e0s prote\u00ednas de <em>heat-shock<\/em> em seu laborat\u00f3rio. Durante o estudo, ele resolveu sequenciar o genoma inteiro do mosquitinho. Isso que permitiria, segundo o autor, \u201cacesso a um conjunto mais amplo de outros genes correlatos aos quais n\u00e3o havia acesso antes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">A an\u00e1lise\u00a0 \u2013 publicada na <em>Nature Communications<\/em> \u2013 revelou que o c\u00f3digo gen\u00e9tico do <em>B. antarctica<\/em> tem apenas 99 milh\u00f5es de pares de nucleot\u00eddeos. \u00c9 um genoma bem menor do que o do piolho (105 milh\u00f5es de pares de base) e do <em>Strepsiptera<\/em> (108 milh\u00f5es de bases). A arquitetura gen\u00e9tica do mosquito-pinguim pode ser compacta, mas \u00e9 complexa: tem cerca de 13.500 genes, mesmo n\u00famero de outras moscas.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Segundo o estudo, a diferen\u00e7a se explica pela aus\u00eancia de muitos segmentos de DNA repetitivos e que n\u00e3o codificam prote\u00ednas. Esses trechos do c\u00f3digo gen\u00e9tico j\u00e1 foram chamados de <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com.br\/hypercubic\/2012\/12\/instrues-encontradas-lixo\/\">DNA-lixo<\/a>, mas hoje sabe-se que essas \u00e1reas controlam a regula\u00e7\u00e3o de genes e podem ter rela\u00e7\u00e3o com a evolu\u00e7\u00e3o de muitas doen\u00e7as.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">O DNA zipado seria o segredo para a sobreviv\u00eancia em condi\u00e7\u00f5es t\u00e3o extremas? Ou a falta de DNA-lixo traria problemas? Falando ao <em><a href=\"http:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2014-08-survival-story-antarctic-small-genome.html\">Phys.org<\/a><\/em>, o Prof. Denlinger admite que n\u00e3o tem tanta certeza: \u201cN\u00f3s n\u00e3o compreendemos as implica\u00e7\u00f5es de n\u00e3o ter toda essa bagagem extra. Parece ser uma boa coisa, em muitos aspectos. Mas os organismos tamb\u00e9m se beneficiam dessa bagagem\u201d. Ainda segundo o professor da Universidade de Ohio, \u201cseria interessante saber se outros extrem\u00f3filos \u2014 carrapatos, moscas e outros organismos que vivem na Ant\u00e1rtica \u2014 tamb\u00e9m apresentam genomas min\u00fasculos ou se essa \u00e9 uma exclusividade dessa mosca. N\u00f3s ainda n\u00e3o sabemos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">O estudo do genoma do mosquito-pinguim tamb\u00e9m revelou outros truques gen\u00e9ticos interessantes. Denlinger descobriu uma fam\u00edlia de genes chamada aquaporinos, que est\u00e3o envolvidos na regula\u00e7\u00e3o do transporte de \u00e1gua para o interior e o exterior das c\u00e9lulas da mosquinha. Muitos insetos sobrevivem com no m\u00e1ximo 20% de desidrata\u00e7\u00e3o. Mas o <em>B. antarctica<\/em> perde at\u00e9 70% de \u00e1gua e vai bem, obrigado. Essa desidrata\u00e7\u00e3o intensa dificulta o congelamento das c\u00e9lulas, mas apesar da descoberta dos genes aquaporinos seu funcionamento ainda n\u00e3o est\u00e1 bem esclarecido. Tamb\u00e9m n\u00e3o se sabe ao certo como a mosca ant\u00e1rtica sobrevive aos altos \u00edndices de radia\u00e7\u00e3o ultravioleta do Polo Sul (um genoma compacto dificulta ou facilita as muta\u00e7\u00f5es por radia\u00e7\u00e3o UV?).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Denlinger afirma que o estudo de organismos como a <em>B. antarctica<\/em> pode ser bastante \u00fatil. A forma como o bichinho resiste \u00e0s baixas temperaturas pode nos ajudar a preservar \u00f3rg\u00e3os doados em congeladores.
