Quando se aproxima de uma estrela solta uma vasta cauda de g\u00e1s e poeira? A maioria das pessoas responderia cometa. Mas para David Ehrenreich tem outra resposta: \u00e9 um Netuno quente. Astr\u00f4nomo do observat\u00f3rio da Universidade de Genebra, na Su\u00ed\u00e7a, Ehrenreich disse ao <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.space.com\/29752-cometlike-planet-first-of-its-kind.html?cmpid=514630_20150719_49342396&amp;adbid=10152950339631466&amp;adbpl=fb&amp;adbpr=17610706465\">Space.com<\/a><\/em> que ficou \u201cat\u00f4nito s\u00f3 com o tamanho da nuvem de g\u00e1s que escapa do planeta\u201d.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">O estranho planeta-cometa chama-se Gliese 436b (ou GJ 436b, para os \u00edntimos) e orbita uma estrela an\u00e3 vermelha situada a cerca de 33 anos-luz da Terra, na dire\u00e7\u00e3o da constela\u00e7\u00e3o de Le\u00e3o. O astro foi encontrado por Ehrenreich <em>et al.<\/em> por meio de observa\u00e7\u00f5es feitas pelos telesc\u00f3pios espaciais Hubble e Chandra. Para o astr\u00f4nomo su\u00ed\u00e7o, GJ 436b \u2014 que tem 10 a 20 massas terrestres, mas situa-se a pouco menos de 5 milh\u00f5es de quil\u00f4metros de sua estrela-m\u00e3e \u2014 \u00e9 o primeiro de uma nova classe, os Netunos quentes.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Diferente dos <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hot_Jupiter\">hot Jupiters<\/a><\/em>, os Netunos infernais parecem ser bem mais inst\u00e1veis, talvez parecidos com uma vers\u00e3o maior do planeta <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com.br\/hypercubic\/2012\/01\/planeta-vapor-de-mercrio\/\">Frevo (um Merc\u00fario que est\u00e1 sendo literalmente evaporado)<\/a>. Esses gigantes gasosos com ares de cometas j\u00e1 haviam sido previstos teoricamente, mas Ehrenreich garante que o GJ 436b \u00e9 o primeiro <em>hot Neptune<\/em> a ser detectado. O que mais chama a aten\u00e7\u00e3o no GJ 436b \u00e9 justamente sua enorme cabeleira e sua loooonga cauda. A cabeleira tem um di\u00e2metro estimado em 3 milh\u00f5es de km (umas cinco vezes a largura da estrela-m\u00e3e ou quase metade do nosso sol). O comprimento da cauda ainda n\u00e3o pode ser medido com exatid\u00e3o, mas simula\u00e7\u00f5es computacionais sugerem algo em torno de 15 milh\u00f5es de km (ou tr\u00eas vezes a dist\u00e2ncia entre o planeta e a estrela GJ 436).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Mas do que \u00e9 feito esse rab\u00e3o de GJ 436b? Basicamente, de hidrog\u00eanio. Os c\u00e1lculos feitos por Ehrenreich e seus colaboradores indicam uma perda de at\u00e9 1000 toneladas de g\u00e1s por segundo. Parece muito, mas perto da an\u00e3 vermelha que chama de sol isso representa apenas 0,1% de deple\u00e7\u00e3o atmosf\u00e9rica a cada bilh\u00e3o de anos. Portanto, o planeta-cometa n\u00e3o vai perder sua atmosfera t\u00e3o cedo.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Mesmo considerando essa perda lenta, a composi\u00e7\u00e3o exata da atmosfera desse tipo de planeta ainda \u00e9 um mist\u00e9rio. Estudos anteriores sugeriam que planetas desse g\u00eanero deveriam ter um c\u00e9u cheio de h\u00e9lio e pobre em hidrog\u00eanio. \u201cNo entanto,\u201d \u2014 explica Ehrenreich \u2014 \u201cpara que fosse realmente pobre em hidrog\u00eanio e rica em h\u00e9lio, a atmosfera de GJ 436b deveria representar uma fra\u00e7\u00e3o muito pequena da massa inicial do planeta, e nesse caso a atmosfera inteira j\u00e1 teria sido varrida a essa altura. N\u00e3o foi isso o que observamos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Para resolver essa charada e encontrar outros planetas-cometas que devem estar batendo cabelo por a\u00ed, Ehrenreich espera contar com novas observa\u00e7\u00f5es a partir do telesc\u00f3pio espacial Kepler e de futuros observat\u00f3rios como o <a href=\"http:\/\/tess.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\">TESS<\/a> (da NASA, com lan\u00e7amento previsto para 2017) e as naves <a href=\"http:\/\/sci.esa.int\/cheops\/\">CHEOPS<\/a> e <a href=\"http:\/\/sci.esa.int\/plato\">PLATO<\/a> (da Ag\u00eancia Espacial Europeia, que devem ser lan\u00e7ados entre 2017 e 2024).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">A equipe liderada por Ehrenreich publicou suas descobertas na edi\u00e7\u00e3o de 25 de junho da <em>Nature<\/em>.
