[imagem: space.com]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"justify\">Ao longo dos \u00faltimos vinte anos, a observa\u00e7\u00e3o de diversos sistemas exoplanet\u00e1rios nos revelou uma nova classe de planetas, que chamamos de Super-Terras. Em comum com o nosso, esses planetas s\u00f3 t\u00eam o nome: suas massas e di\u00e2metros s\u00e3o muito maiores, suas posi\u00e7\u00f5es em rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 estrela-m\u00e3e variam e suas composi\u00e7\u00f5es qu\u00edmicas e geol\u00f3gicas continuam desconhecidas. Mandar sondas geol\u00f3gicas para l\u00e1 \u00e9 evidentemente imposs\u00edvel (ao menos nesse s\u00e9culo), mas n\u00e3o custa nada <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">sonhar<\/span> fazer umas extrapola\u00e7\u00f5es te\u00f3ricas \u2014 e ainda pode nos ajudar a compreender a pr\u00f3pria Terra.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">J\u00e1 se sabe faz tempo que os dois elementos mais abundantes no manto da Terra s\u00e3o o oxig\u00eanio e o magn\u00e9sio. Entretanto, segundo Sergey Lobanov, Alexander Goncharov e Nicholas Holtgrewe (todos f\u00edsicos do Carnegie Institute, nos EUA), n\u00e3o devemos supor que os exoplanetas rochosos tenham uma mineralogia id\u00eantica \u00e0 nossa. Mas como estudar o subsolo de mundos t\u00e3o distantes?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Podemos come\u00e7ar com algo que sabemos determinar, como a composi\u00e7\u00e3o qu\u00edmica das estrelas, que h\u00e1 mais de um s\u00e9culo vem sendo feita por meio de espectrometria. Pelo espectro das estrelas-m\u00e3e de planetas rochosos, sabemos que suas composi\u00e7\u00f5es qu\u00edmicas variam muito. Em algumas, por exemplo, foi observada alta concentra\u00e7\u00e3o de oxig\u00eanio. Como s\u00e3o formados a partir da mesma mat\u00e9ria prima, os planetas que orbitam tais estrelas tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o ricos em oxig\u00eanio. Al\u00e9m das varia\u00e7\u00f5es de temperatura e press\u00e3o, esse oxig\u00eanio extra pode fazer toda a diferen\u00e7a no interior desses planetas.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">A combina\u00e7\u00e3o mais simples de magn\u00e9sio e oxig\u00eanio \u2014 \u00f3xido de magn\u00e9sio, MgO \u2014 \u00e9 bastante est\u00e1vel, mesmo sob as altas press\u00f5es do manto terrestre. O segundo composto \u2014 per\u00f3xido de magn\u00e9sio (MgO2) \u2014 pode ser formado em laborat\u00f3rio quando h\u00e1 muito oxig\u00eanio dispon\u00edvel, mas torna-se bastante inst\u00e1vel ao ser aquecido como aconteceria no interior de um planeta. Bigornas de diamantes aquecidas a laser foram usadas para imitar as condi\u00e7\u00f5es extremas do interior dos planetas terrestres. Na bigorna diamantina, pequenas amostras de \u00f3xido de magn\u00e9sio (MgO) e oxig\u00eanio foram esmagadas a press\u00f5es que variam da press\u00e3o ambiente a 1,6 milh\u00f5es de atmosferas (0 a 16 gigapascals). [detalhe da Fig. 2 do artigo em refer\u00eancia]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"justify\">Assim, Lobanov et. al. descobriram que a partir de 960 mil atmosferas (96 GPa) e 2150 Kelvin (1877 \u00baC), o \u00f3xido de magn\u00e9sio reagia com o oxig\u00eanio, formando o per\u00f3xido de magn\u00e9sio. \u201cNossos resultados sugerem que o per\u00f3xido de magn\u00e9sio pode ser abundante em mantos e n\u00facleos de planetas extremamente oxidados fora do nosso Sistema Solar\u201d, explicou Lobanov ao <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2015-09-distant-planet-interior-chemistry-differ.html\">Phys.org<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Tais resultados foram publicados on-line em 1\u00ba. de setembro no <em>Scientific Reports, <\/em>jornal especializado <em>open-source<\/em> editado pela <em>Nature<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Por ser quimicamente inerte, MgO tem sido usado como condutor para transmitir temperatura e press\u00e3o em experimentos que envolvem condi\u00e7\u00f5es extremas. Para Gonchanov, esse papel do \u00f3xido de magn\u00e9sio deve ser revisado, pois tal subst\u00e2ncia n\u00e3o seria assim t\u00e3o inerte e estaria criando rea\u00e7\u00f5es indesej\u00e1veis, contaminando os resultados.
