Publicado em 1886, o livro de Cushing Biggs Hassell n\u00e3o \u00e9 apenas um calhama\u00e7o com umas mil p\u00e1ginas. Ele cont\u00e9m o que se considera a mais longa senten\u00e7a j\u00e1 escrita em um livro. \u00c9 simplesmente o quinto par\u00e1grafo do cap\u00edtulo XIX, que trata, justamente, do s\u00e9culo XIX.<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia\">The nineteenth is the century of the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, in a long series of bloody and demoralizing European wars; the [\u2026]<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<p><a name='more'><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Esses s\u00e3o apenas os primeiros 140 caracteres da senten\u00e7a. A frase come\u00e7a na p\u00e1gina 580 e ocupa todas as <b>seis <\/b>p\u00e1ginas seguintes. No total, s\u00e3o 20.438 caracteres. Seriam necess\u00e1rias 146 tu\u00edtes para escrever a ora\u00e7\u00e3o inteira. As 3153 palavras s\u00e3o interrompidas aqui e acol\u00e1 por 360 v\u00edrgulas e 86 ponto-e-v\u00edrgulas (\u00e9 esse o plural?). Como o exemplo perfeito da fabulosa arte da prolixidade, o estilo tamb\u00e9m n\u00e3o \u00e9 muito direto. Tamb\u00e9m n\u00e3o poderia faltar em algo do tipo um monte de <strike>enche\u00e7\u00e3o de lingui\u00e7a<\/strike> cita\u00e7\u00f5es. Me abstive de contar todas as aspas, mas encontrei sessenta intercala\u00e7\u00f5es: s\u00e3o 27 travess\u00f5es e 33 pares de par\u00eanteses, al\u00e9m de seis notas de rodap\u00e9 (n\u00e3o inclusas nesse censo ortogr\u00e1fico). <\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">Caso n\u00e3o caia no sono ou morra sem f\u00f4lego, o pobre leitor enfrenta tudo isso antes de encontrar <b><i>O<\/i><\/b> ponto final, que vem logo depois de praticamente todos os <em>\u2013ismos<\/em> oitocentistas:<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia\">[\u2026] Universalism, Unitarianism, Naturalism, Anti-Supernaturalism, Unspiritualism, Undoctrinalism, Superficialism, Philosophism, Transcendentalism, Paganism, Pantheism, Humanitarianism, Liberalism, Neologism, Campbellism, Irvingism, Darbyism, Puseyism, Mormonism, Millerism, Wine-brennerianism, Two-Scedism, Psychopannychism, Non-Resurrectionism, Annihilationism, Universal Restorationism, Pseudo-Spiritualism, Utilitarianism, Rationalism, Pelagiamsm, Scientism, Agnosticism, Omniscienceism, Presumptuousism, Stoicism, Materialism, Evolutionism, Fatalism, Atheism, Optimism, Pessimism, Socialism, Communism, Libertinism, Red Republicanism, Internationalism, Nihilism, Destructionism, Dynamitism, Atrocicism and Anarchism.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div align=\"justify\">Confesso que n\u00e3o conhecia alguns. Por si s\u00f3, esse <em>grand finale<\/em> j\u00e1 bastava para resumir os 1800.<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">Em s\u00edntese, essa frase-par\u00e1grafo \u00e9 uma longa descri\u00e7\u00e3o do s\u00e9culo XIX, em que Hassell prova que \u201c[\u2026] ap\u00f3s todo nosso progresso, este ainda \u00e9 um mundo muito miser\u00e1vel e cheio de pecado [\u2026]\u201d. Ironicamente, o autor dessa p\u00e9rola deplora a arte moderna, mas antecipa o recurso do mon\u00f3logo interior dos grandes romances do s\u00e9culo XX.<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">Compreensivelmente (n\u00e3o sei dizer se infelizmente ou n\u00e3o), n\u00e3o h\u00e1 uma edi\u00e7\u00e3o brasileira. Seria praticamente imposs\u00edvel manter uma senten\u00e7a t\u00e3o longa em portugu\u00eas.
