As mol\u00e9culas, por sua vez, unem-se pela influ\u00eancia das pontes de hidrog\u00eanio (que s\u00e3o fortes) ou da <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/For%C3%A7as_de_Van_der_Waals\">for\u00e7as de van der Waals<\/a> (que \u00e9 fraca). T\u00e3o fraca \u00e9 a for\u00e7a de van der Waals que ela nem recebe muita aten\u00e7\u00e3o dos professores. Nem dos f\u00edsico-qu\u00edmicos, pois essa intera\u00e7\u00e3o s\u00f3 foi mensurada com precis\u00e3o recentemente.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Antes de entender como foi a medi\u00e7\u00e3o feita pelos pesquisadores do Instituto Su\u00ed\u00e7o de Nanoci\u00eancias e da Universidade de Basil\u00e9ia, vamos nos aprofundar nas for\u00e7as de van der Waals. S\u00e3o for\u00e7as, no plural, porque tais intera\u00e7\u00f5es podem ser tr\u00eas tipos: 1) entre dois dipolos permanentes (tamb\u00e9m conhecida como For\u00e7a de Keeson); 2) entre um dipolo permanente e um polo induzido (a chamada For\u00e7a de Debye) e 3) entre dois dipolos instantaneamente induzidos (ou seja, uma For\u00e7a de dispers\u00e3o de London. Nos anos 1870, o holand\u00eas <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Diderik_van_der_Waals\">Johanes Diderik van der Waals [1837-1923<\/a>]\u00a0foi o primeiro a descrev\u00ea-las e por isso elas levam o seu nome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Van der Waals percebeu que a press\u00e3o dos gases deveria ser menor do que se esperava na \u00e9poca por causa da influ\u00eancia dos dipolos. Os dipolos formam-se quando, mesmo que momentaneamente, os el\u00e9trons de uma mol\u00e9cula concentram-se numa de suas extremidades. Para compensar esse desequil\u00edbrio, as mol\u00e9culas podem se aproximar, formando uma esp\u00e9cie de liga\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Por ter curto alcance e depender de intera\u00e7\u00f5es ef\u00eameras, as for\u00e7as de van der Waals sempre foram consideradas fracas, especialmente em compara\u00e7\u00e3o com os outros tipos de liga\u00e7\u00f5es qu\u00edmicas. Mesmo assim, a for\u00e7a de van der Waals tem um importante papel nos processos que envolvem coes\u00e3o, ades\u00e3o, fric\u00e7\u00e3o ou condensa\u00e7\u00e3o. Trata-se, portanto, de uma for\u00e7a meio grudenta e \u00e9 poss\u00edvel observar seus efeitos macroscopicamente: quando uma lagartixa anda de cabe\u00e7a pra baixo pelo teto, est\u00e1 sendo sustentada pelas for\u00e7as de van der Waals entre as mol\u00e9culas de sua pata e as do forro.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/diariodebiologia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/11\/574px-Gecko_foot_on_glass_2.jpg?resize=600%2C524\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/diariodebiologia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/11\/574px-Gecko_foot_on_glass_2.jpg?resize=600%2C524\" width=\"600\" height=\"524\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Close na pata de Vanderval, onde os c\u00edlios funcionam como um adesivo gra\u00e7as \u00e0s For\u00e7as de Van der Waals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ent\u00e3o como \u00e9 que se mede uma for\u00e7a que geralmente \u00e9 t\u00e3o ef\u00eamera e t\u00e3o fraca? Para isso, \u00e9 necess\u00e1rio um microsc\u00f3pio de for\u00e7a at\u00f4mica em baixa temperatura e uma min\u00fascula caixa de ovos \u2014 t\u00e3o pequena que nela s\u00f3 caiba um \u00e1tomo por vez. Feita de cobre, essa caixinha de ovos tem nichos onde podem ser encaixados \u00e1tomos de gases nobres, como xen\u00f4nio, arg\u00f4nio e cript\u00f4nio. A ponta do microsc\u00f3pio tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 formada por um \u00fanico \u00e1tomo, de xen\u00f4nio. Como era de se esperar, quanto maior a dist\u00e2ncia entre os \u00e1tomos, mais fraca a for\u00e7a. Surpreendentemente, a for\u00e7a de van der Waals se mostrou ligeiramente mais intensa do que se calculava. Em todos os gases nobres analisados, os valores absolutos ficaram pouco acima do esperado. O maior desvio foi entre os \u00e1tomos de xen\u00f4nio, com uma intensidade que foi o dobro do que se pensava.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Uma explica\u00e7\u00e3o para essa discrep\u00e2ncia, segundo os autores do artigo publicado na <em>Nature Communications<\/em>, \u00e9 que pode haver uma poss\u00edvel troca de cargas mesmo entre os gases nobres. Nesse caso, ef\u00eameras liga\u00e7\u00f5es covalentes seriam formadas, o que daria um refor\u00e7o \u00e0s for\u00e7as de van der Waals.
