Ele coletou um esp\u00e9cime e, ap\u00f3s exames morfol\u00f3gicos, descobriu que, de fato, era uma esp\u00e9cie vegetal desconhecida. O professor batizou-a de <em>Gastrodia kuroshimensis<\/em> e descreveu-a em artigo publicado no dia 14\/10 na revista <em>Phytotaxa<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">O par\u00e1grafo acima poderia ser uma notinha no (raro) p\u00e9 da p\u00e1gina de ci\u00eancia de um jornal, mas a descoberta \u00e9 mais extraordin\u00e1ria do que parece. A descri\u00e7\u00e3o de uma esp\u00e9cie in\u00e9dita no territ\u00f3rio japon\u00eas j\u00e1 seria um acontecimento, porque a flora da regi\u00e3o n\u00e3o deveria mais ter segredos. A <em>G. kuroshimensis<\/em> n\u00e3o s\u00f3 foi um segredo muito bem-guardado pela natureza como vai fazer bot\u00e2nicos e micologistas quebrarem a cabe\u00e7a.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">A plantinha descoberta pelo prof. Suetsugu, da Universidade de Kobe, \u00e9 min\u00fascula e mais parece um fungo: amarronzada, cresce escondida debaixo das folhas ca\u00eddas no solo, n\u00e3o faz fotoss\u00edntese e suas flores n\u00e3o se abrem. Ela s\u00f3 se torna um pouco mais vis\u00edvel durante o surgimento das flores, que aparecem em meio ao folharal. Extremamente raro e pouco estudado, esse tipo de vegetal \u00e9 conhecido como planta n\u00e3o-fotossint\u00e9tica micorrizal ou, para ser mais breve, planta micoheterotr\u00f3fica.<\/p>\n<h4 align=\"justify\">Mico-o-qu\u00ea? Cleisto-o-qu\u00ea?<\/h4>\n<p align=\"justify\">Isso quer dizer que a <em>G. kuroshimensis<\/em> nutre-se n\u00e3o da luz do sol, mas dos fungos que hospeda. Mais estranho ainda \u00e9 que suas flores n\u00e3o desabrocham, um fen\u00f4meno conhecido como cleistogamia. A cleistogamia ocorre em plantas que d\u00e3o bot\u00f5es fechados nos quais acontece um processo de auto-fertiliza\u00e7\u00e3o. Esse mecanismo de reprodu\u00e7\u00e3o tem intrigado os cientistas desde os tempos de Darwin.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">No r\u00e9s do ch\u00e3o da floresta, flores cleistog\u00e2micas fazem sentido: sem a necessidade de serem grandes, vistosas ou cheirosas, elas exigem menos recursos, o que tamb\u00e9m descarta a depend\u00eancia de polinizadores. Sem a necessidade de flores abertas, a planta pode devotar seus limitados recursos \u00e0 cria\u00e7\u00e3o de sementes mais resistentes, capazes de sobreviver e brotar na escurid\u00e3o do t\u00e9rreo das florestas.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Entretanto, essa \u00e9 uma aposta arriscada: como s\u00e3o fruto de auto-poliniza\u00e7\u00e3o, as plantas como <em>G. kumoshimensis<\/em> s\u00e3o mais fr\u00e1geis, tendo pouca variabilidade gen\u00e9tica e menos capacidade de adaptar-se \u00e0s mudan\u00e7as em seu habitat (que ali\u00e1s costuma ser bem limitado, j\u00e1 que as sementes n\u00e3o chegam muito longe). Por isso, em certas condi\u00e7\u00f5es, a maioria das plantas com essa caracter\u00edstica tamb\u00e9m pode apresentar flores chasmog\u00e2micas (comuns, de poliniza\u00e7\u00e3o cruzada).
