Eles contavam hist\u00f3rias sobre uma criatura estranha, do tamanho de um bezerro de dois anos, com uma cabe\u00e7a redonda, p\u00e9s de macaco, uma cauda curta, muito peluda e orelhas e face que pareciam humanas. Os <strike>madagascarenhos<\/strike> malgaxes a chamavam <i>tretretretre<\/i>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Como o animal descrito nos contos dos nativos n\u00e3o se parecia com nada existente na fauna de Madagascar, os europeus consideraram o&nbsp;<i>tretretretre <\/i>como&nbsp;mais uma ex\u00f3tica crendice local. Era uma esp\u00e9cie de l\u00eamure gigante que<i>&nbsp;<\/i>estaria extinto h\u00e1 milhares de anos. Mas agora os zoologistas pensam que o megal\u00eamure teria vivido pelo menos at\u00e9 meados do s\u00e9culo VI, quando os humanos ocuparam a ilha e extinguiram sua megafauna.<\/p>\n<p>Outros, por\u00e9m, afirmam que o&nbsp;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 19px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: inherit;font-style: italic\">Palaeopropithecus ingens<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: inherit\">, descoberto em 1899,<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: 13px;font-weight: bold\"> <\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: inherit\">seria a inspira\u00e7\u00e3o por tr\u00e1s da lenda. O&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 19px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: inherit\"><i>Palaeopropithecus <\/i>era um l\u00eamure um pouco menor que o <i>Megaladapis <\/i>e com uma face mais \u201chumana\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Seja como for, tanto o <i>Megaladapis <\/i>quanto o<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: inherit;font-style: italic\">&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 19px\"><i><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: inherit\">Palaeopropithecus <\/span><\/i><\/span>ainda existiam quando um deles ou ambos passaram ao folclore malgaxe como <i>tretretretre<\/i>.
