Mas uma forma cristalina rec\u00e9m-descoberta \u00e9 mais leve que a \u00e1gua e poderia ser classificada como peso-pena<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Por mais leve que seja, n\u00e3o se v\u00ea colheres de alum\u00ednio flutuando na \u00e1gua da pia enquanto se lava a lou\u00e7a. Extremamente male\u00e1vel, este metal prateado foi isolado pela primeira vez por Friedrich W\u00f6hler em 1827 e desde ent\u00e3o est\u00e1 presente numa infinidade de objetos \u2014\u00a0das banais colheres e panelas a trens e avi\u00f5es supervelozes. Parte de sua leveza e resist\u00eancia deve-se \u00e0 sua estrutura c\u00fabica de faces centradas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Seria poss\u00edvel deixar o alum\u00ednio ainda mais leve? Essa foi a pergunta ouvida pelo qu\u00edmico russo Alexander Boldyrev, professor de qu\u00edmica e bioqu\u00edmica da Universidade Estadual de Utah (EUA). Em busca de respostas, ele recorreu a seus colegas da Universidade Federal do Sul da R\u00fassia, em Rostov-sobre-o-Don. &#8220;A abordagem dos meus colegas a esse desafio foi bastante inovadora&#8221;, explicou Boldyrev em comunicado ao <em><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2017-09-ultra-light-aluminum-chemists-breakthrough-material.html\">Phys.org<\/a><\/em>. &#8220;Eles come\u00e7aram com uma estrutura cristalina conhecida \u2014\u00a0no caso, o diamante \u2014\u00a0e substitu\u00edram cada \u00e1tomo de carbono por\u00a0um tetraedro de alum\u00ednio&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Por meio de simula\u00e7\u00f5es computacionais, Boldyrev <em>et. al.<\/em> descobriram que essa restrutura\u00e7\u00e3o do alum\u00ednio \u00e9 poss\u00edvel e resulta numa forma ultra-leve do metal. Enquanto o alum\u00ednio convencional tem uma densidade de 2,7 gramas por cent\u00edmetro c\u00fabico, a vers\u00e3o tetra\u00e9drica tem apenas 0,61 g\/cm3 \u2014\u00a0t\u00e3o leve que uma colher feita desse material poderia flutuar na \u00e1gua. C\u00e1lculos realizados pela equipe de cientistas russos confirmaram que esse novo tipo de alum\u00ednio cristalino n\u00e3o s\u00f3 \u00e9 bem leve como est\u00e1vel. Os resultados foram publicados <em>on-line<\/em> pelo <em>Journal of Physical Chemistry C<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Essa descoberta abre as portas para ainda mais aplica\u00e7\u00f5es para esse metal abundante, resistente \u00e0 corros\u00e3o, n\u00e3o-magn\u00e9tico, relativamente f\u00e1cil de produzir e de reciclar. Segundo Boldyrev, o novo material pode se tornar \u00fatil na ind\u00fastria aeroespacial, na medicina e na fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de autope\u00e7as. No entanto, isso ainda depende de novos testes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Por mais bem-feitas que tenham sido, as simula\u00e7\u00f5es computacionais e os c\u00e1lculos dos pesquisadores n\u00e3o foram capazes de revelar caracter\u00edsticas importantes como a resist\u00eancia do alum\u00ednio peso-pena. Para isso, ser\u00e1 necess\u00e1rio verificar como fabricar esse novo lutador met\u00e1lico.
