[Imagem: NASA\/divulga\u00e7\u00e3o]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify\">Uma das primeiras coisas que aprendemos sobre a Lua na escola \u00e9 que l\u00e1 n\u00e3o d\u00e1 pra respirar porque n\u00e3o tem atmosfera. Mas nem sempre foi assim: a Lua teve uma camada de ar, ainda que irrespir\u00e1vel.<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Descobrir a hist\u00f3ria geol\u00f3gica (ou melhor, selenol\u00f3gica) do nosso sat\u00e9lite natural foi um dos principais objetivos do projeto Apollo. Quase meio s\u00e9culo depois de recolhidas, amostras lunares continuam nos revelando o passado do nossa companheira noturna. Entre essas amostras est\u00e3o pedras bas\u00e1lticas que foram estudadas recentemente pela Dra. Debra Needham e o Dr. David Kring, vulcanologistas planet\u00e1rios da NASA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Como na Terra, o basalto lunar \u00e9 uma rocha de origem vulc\u00e2nica e sua cor escura forma as \u00e1reas conhecidas como <em>mares<\/em>. Sua an\u00e1lise revela quando e como ocorreram erup\u00e7\u00f5es. Mais do que saber isso, Needham e Kring queriam descobrir quais foram os gases emitidos pelos vulc\u00f5es da Lua. O que os dois descobriram &#8220;muda completamente o modo como pensamos na Lua. Ela se torna um corpo planet\u00e1rio muito mais din\u00e2mico para se explorar&#8221;, disse Needham em comunicado ao <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sci-news.com\/space\/moon-atmosphere-05346.html\"><em>Sci-News<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Quem visitasse a Lua h\u00e1 cerca de 3,5 bilh\u00f5es de anos encontraria uma r\u00e9plica da Terra da mesma \u00e9poca: um ambiente hostil, com uma intensa atividade vulc\u00e2nica e uma atmosfera densa e fumacenta, composta de mon\u00f3xido de carbono, enxofre e \u00e1gua. Essa \u00e9 a conclus\u00e3o das an\u00e1lises feitas por Needham e Kring, publicada em artigo a ser publicado na <em>Earth and Planetary Science Letters, <\/em>mas j\u00e1 disponibilizado<em> on-line<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">De acordo com o estudo, as erup\u00e7\u00f5es vulc\u00e2nicas geraram 10\u00b9\u2079 gramas de mat\u00e9ria vol\u00e1til na superf\u00edcie lunar. Foi o bastante para formar uma atmosfera 1,5 vez mais densa do que a que existe hoje em Marte. Ent\u00e3o onde foi parar o ar da Lua e como ela se tornou o deserto est\u00e9ril que \u00e9 hoje?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Apesar de densa, a atmosfera lunar n\u00e3o durou muito: em apenas 70 milh\u00f5es de anos, a Lua ficou sem ar. Um dos motivos \u00e9 que nosso sat\u00e9lite natural n\u00e3o tem um campo magn\u00e9tico, que teria protegido a atmosfera da varredura dos ventos solares. Al\u00e9m disso, a gravidade lunar \u00e9 menor e tem menos poder de reter gases. Ainda assim, nem tudo teria sido perdido para o espa\u00e7o.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Segundo os autores da pesquisa, \u00e9 poss\u00edvel que uma pequena parte da atmosfera lunar tenha sido reabsorvida pelo solo. Isso explicaria, por exemplo, a exist\u00eancia de dep\u00f3sitos de \u00e1gua encontrados nos polos da Lua nos \u00faltimos anos. Mesmo que uma fra\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00e3o pequena como 0,1% da \u00e1gua lunar tenha sido retida, estima-se que esse volume seria o bastante para sustentar algumas miss\u00f5es tripuladas de longa dura\u00e7\u00e3o.
