A COVID-19 escancarou a vulnerabilidade da globaliza\u00e7\u00e3o e tem sido um experimento n\u00e3o programado sobre os impactos das mudan\u00e7as do clima. Se por um lado, o confinamento afetou a economia e a sanidade mental, por outro, se revelou ben\u00e9fica para o meio ambiente. Como resultado involunt\u00e1rio, as medidas de conten\u00e7\u00e3o da pandemia ajudaram a melhorar a qualidade do ar, com a redu\u00e7\u00e3o das emiss\u00f5es de CO2, principal g\u00e1s de efeito estufa (GEE), e dos poluentes t\u00f3xicos, especialmente nos centros urbanos.<\/p>\n

Segundo a Organiza\u00e7\u00e3o Mundial de Meteorologia [1], o confinamento resultou numa redu\u00e7\u00e3o de 17% nas emiss\u00f5es de GEE em abril, em compara\u00e7\u00e3o com 2019. Entretanto, um estudo da Nature Climate Change<\/em> reportou que a redu\u00e7\u00e3o nas emiss\u00f5es globais de GEE e de poluentes por causa da pandemia ser\u00e1 \u201cinsignificante\u201d para alterar o rumo das mudan\u00e7as clim\u00e1ticas na Terra, levando a uma redu\u00e7\u00e3o de apenas 0,005\u00baC a 0,01\u00baC na temperatura do planeta.<\/p>\n

Esta n\u00e3o \u00e9 a primeira vez que vivemos um per\u00edodo de redu\u00e7\u00e3o das emiss\u00f5es de gases poluentes em decorr\u00eancia de uma diminui\u00e7\u00e3o das atividades humanas. Durante a crise financeira de 2008, por exemplo, percebeu-se redu\u00e7\u00e3o na emiss\u00e3o destes gases. Mas, ap\u00f3s esse per\u00edodo, as emiss\u00f5es foram retomadas em n\u00edveis ainda maiores em decorr\u00eancia do esfor\u00e7o econ\u00f4mico de recupera\u00e7\u00e3o. Isso s\u00f3 reafirma que as melhorias s\u00e3o ef\u00eameras e pontuais, uma vez que n\u00e3o est\u00e3o acontecendo transforma\u00e7\u00f5es sist\u00eamicas, nos processos decis\u00f3rios, nas estruturas de produ\u00e7\u00e3o de bens, no modelo de consumo, no uso da terra e na matriz de transportes atuais.<\/p>\n

Por que a crise clim\u00e1tica n\u00e3o tem o mesmo apelo da sanit\u00e1ria?<\/h5>\n

A quest\u00e3o sanit\u00e1ria \u00e9 vista como crise porque pressup\u00f5e a retomada ao estado \u201cnormal\u201d ap\u00f3s ser superada. J\u00e1 a quest\u00e3o clim\u00e1tica, n\u00e3o alcan\u00e7a esse status porque cresce de forma gradual. Mesmo assim, esta \u00e9 uma oportunidade de testemunhar um per\u00edodo prop\u00edcio para reavermos a implementa\u00e7\u00e3o de pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas e o esfor\u00e7o coletivo a fim de descarbonizar a sociedade e a economia.<\/p>\n

Essas mudan\u00e7as v\u00e3o depender das pol\u00edticas de recupera\u00e7\u00e3o das atividades no p\u00f3s-pandemia, mas tamb\u00e9m de um esfor\u00e7o coletivo para garantir sua implementa\u00e7\u00e3o para ue essa redu\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o seja apenas tempor\u00e1ria.Al\u00e9m disso, apenas mudan\u00e7as estruturais na economia e nas matrizes de transporte e energia n\u00e3o ser\u00e3o capazes de sustentar redu\u00e7\u00f5es em longo prazo porque s\u00e3o oriundas de respostas individuais. Em vez de atitudes tomadas por imposi\u00e7\u00e3o, como a suspens\u00e3o de voos e a limita\u00e7\u00e3o do uso de carros, \u00e9 preciso maior conscientiza\u00e7\u00e3o para atingirmos as metas de emiss\u00f5es de GEE.<\/p>\n
