Um par de décadas antes do surgimento da Internet como uma grande teia de informações conectadas por links, Burke já enfatizava o caráter interconectado e não-linear da evolução da ciência. De espigas de milho a bombas atômicas, passando por heranças e um alemão chamado Albert Einstein, eventos e personalidades aparentemente sem importância interagem para moldar os mais intrincados e inesperados desenvolvimentos que levam ao mundo em que vivemos. Esta teia de conexões não tem fim, e de fato, se expande e acelera, enquanto muitos acabam perdidos em meio aos nexos mais importantes que ligam um mouse de computador a lasers, semicondutores, física quântica, bombas atômicas e… espigas de milho.
